A Client’s Reflection

There’s always a moment, just before a painting leaves the studio, where I pause a little longer than usual. Delivering a commissioned piece is a strange mix of emotions—real excitement to see it go to its rightful home, and a quiet sense of loss in letting go of something I’ve spent so many hours with. You come to know every detail, every brushstroke, and in a way, it becomes part of your own story for a time.

And then, of course, it’s gone; hung somewhere new, beginning a life that I’m no longer part of.

I often find myself wondering about them months, even years later. Where does the painting live now? Has it found a place in the rhythm of their home? Do they pass it every day without thinking, or does it still catch them, just for a second, and take them back, to the day they got married? More than anything, I wonder how it makes them feel now, long after the wedding day itself has passed into memory.

So, I reached out to a past client and asked just that.

Honestly, it’s one of the few things from the wedding that I see almost every single day. We have it hanging in our living room, so it’s always there without being overwhelming, if that makes sense. It just feels like part of our home now.

Every time I look at it, it takes me straight back—but not in a loud or obvious way like flipping through photos. It’s quieter than that. It reminds me of how I felt holding the bouquet that morning, and all the little details I probably didn’t fully take in at the time. There’s something about it that slows everything down again.

I think what I love most is that it doesn’t just remind me of the day, it reminds me of the meaning behind it. The feeling of everything changing in the best way. It’s hard to explain, but it feels more emotional than a photograph. It’s become more meaningful over time, not less. It’s not just ‘a wedding thing’ anymore, it feels like a piece of the start of our life together.

I’m really, really glad we decided to do it.
