The Blooming Journey

Updated: Aug 13

Imagine the flower gently swaying in the breeze, breathing in the sunshine unaware of the adventure ahead of it.

As a wedding bouquet artist I get to see the finished bouquet often before the bride or groom does. Visiting with their florist on the morning of the wedding, to take reference photos, ready to paint back in my studio.

Until recently however, I’d given very little thought to the individual flowers themselves and their own unique journeys that have brought them to be part of your emotional milestone.

I love the thought that as the bride or groom sit down with their florist to discuss their flowers, a nearby farmer sows the seeds of the flowers that will be in the final bouquet. All parties unaware that serendipitously their paths are going to perfectly cross. The flower whose journey we’re following takes 80 days to grow from seed to maturity. Sitting amongst thousands of flowers just like itself, in stunning strips of field after field of flowers, creating a magnificent floral patchwork. It’s quite a sight to see.

"...together in that moment to help celebrate love."

When the flower is close to its best, it’s harvested by the farmer and prepared ready to be delivered. This involves carefully picking the flower, disinfecting and refrigerating it. Pampered and chilly, all the flowers, including ours, are gathered to fulfil the florist's order and after a comfortable journey our flower arrives at the florists. This is a few days before the wedding so the florist can manage the flower back to its peak beauty, pampering it with food and water. Then on the morning of the wedding the skilled florist begins creating the bouquet already planned. Our flower, trimmed and clipped to the right size, is lovingly placed beside the sun flowers, daisies, craspedia and eucalyptus leaves. The stunning bouquet sits patiently in a vase with water, and our flower watches on as more of the wedding couple's flowers are created.

When the wedding flowers are all completed our flower’s second most important journey begins as it makes its way towards the wedding venue and the bride. The most important journey, of course, is the short walk the bouquet and bride take down the aisle in front of friends and family.

The culmination of months of growing and potentially years of planning come together in that moment to help celebrate love.
