Your Wedding Bouquet Portrait: The Process

Discovery

At the first stage we’ll discover how you would like your painting to look. I’ll ask some simple questions to build up a picture of what you want, and some questions too about you and your wedding. For example if you already have a florist, and who and where they are. When we both know the details I’ll draw up a scope of work agreement outlining the details of your painting, and the payment and painting milestones, for us both to sign.

The References

When you know who your florist is I’ll arrange with them a time to visit to take reference photos of your wedding bouquet. This is often just after your florist has created them, on the morning of your wedding. I can then take these references back to my studio to create your painting.

The Painting

Painted in water-mixable oil paint on a natural linen canvas panel, the time it takes to complete depends firstly on the size of canvas you choose and more importantly on the intricacy of your wedding bouquet, and if you have any additional requests. Typically it takes two weeks to complete a wedding bouquet portrait, ready for framing.

My process begins with working out the composition of your painting; ensuring the bouquet is shown at its best, including any details which are personal to you and your partner. The sketch is next, directly on to the canvas, followed by the first layer of oil paint to block out the basic shapes. The second layer is where I use the oil paints to find the form of the flowers and decorations within the bouquet before in the third layer adding in the details.

With your painting complete and dry, I’ll apply a thin layer of varnish to protect the painting. At this stage I’ll give you some options for framing (best to do when the painting is finished), or ask if you have a specific frame in mind for your painting.

The Delivery

When your painting is framed it’s carefully wrapped ready for the courier to collect it. I’ll confirm with you again where you would like your painting delivered and typically within that week your wedding bouquet portrait will be with you.

"Your wedding bouquet and all those lovely warm memories captured in a painting that you and yours will treasure for generations"
